My process of working often begins unexpectedly, with premonition and coincidence that gradually turns into determination. Collisions of various historical perspectives appear to me as visual impulses. Each encounter with a unique voice or moment guides the process on and develops these initial visual impulses cumulatively. Repetition, flux and chance encounters tie together elements that originate across time and place, and give them unforeseen significance through the mystery of belonging together. What could possibly connect unknown Chinese coal miner from today with a nearly century old torpedo boat shipwreck on the Gulf of Finland?
My latest work, 2156, is another mystery lost and found in film, lip prints of a fragile world kissing infinite real time in ecstasy. Everything in 2156 is misplaced out of time and space, yet belongs together like in a revelation. It is an experiment of filmic reality as a gaze into nothingness, which conceals its origins of time and place with constantly alternating materialities and narratives. Through the concept of nothingness it speaks on behalf of silence, focus and disengagement from hectic tendencies of exchange, which are symptomatic of present society.
