"The digital world is a new and exotic state of consciousness in which we lose our sense of time and sink into a deep hibernation, much like creatures overwintering. What is most magical about this state is the experience of being together. Unlike hibernating bears, however, we are able to communicate with others of our kind while in this dormant state, and this social interaction can take place even across oceans and continents."

Background

The first phase of the work was realised in 2025–2026 as an artistic research project commissioned by the City of Espoo, focusing on young people’s digital everyday life and lived experience. The project combined weekly workshops with young people, research and the community artwork Kosketus (Touch), in which the fingers of 254 young people were cast in acrylic resin, accompanied by a soundscape based on the participants’ graphic scores. This project laid the foundation for the method I am now developing into a larger media artwork.

About the work

Kosketus is composed of fingers cast in acrylic resin, sound and moving light. Each finger is individual and recognisably part of the human body. Repeated and illuminated, the fingers begin to appear as abstract forms, a porous mass in which the individual and the collective can no longer be told apart. The light raises the fingers into view one by one and finally gathers them into a vibrating field. Together, the fingers form something like an organic coral reef.

The sound consists of a lyrical, polyphonic text that moves through the personal pronouns from "I" to "we", "they" and finally "you". As the text moves, the viewer's position shifts: the observer becomes the one addressed. Valence, gravity, friction and sliding operate in the text as forces that bind and separate. Rhythm participates in the construction of meaning; pauses open space for lingering, but also for uncertainty. Between the human voices, passages open up that belong to the non-human living world, setting alongside them another temporality and another way of being.

The textual dimension of the work is organised around a tension: how people attach to one another, are drawn to one another, resist one another and drift apart. Connection is not a given state in the work but a continually reforming relation, one that includes friction.
