“In Invisible Words, Wang points at how, when verbal language dissolves, resonance emerges as primary mode of relation. Resonance is able to connect us across time, cultures, and geographies. In this regard, it is interesting to note how time and space remain open-ended in Wang’s work. Her photographs were taken in a wide range of places—in China, in Europe, in Japan, in the United States—but there is no indication that allows for a precise identification of the where and when of these pictures.
Emblematic of this strategy is the colored photograph of a crowd—underlying a feeling of togetherness— captured in the moment of watching, in a state of clear awe and enjoyment, something unfold before their eye, but which remains outside of the picture, for us only to imagine.
Time and Space retain their mystery. In freeing the picture from circumstantial details, the artist aims to illuminate its generative nature: an image opens up space for questioning, for self-scrutiny, for thoughts and feelings of transformation. With its quietly provocative collection of resonating images collapsing the boundaries between time past, time present, and time future, and invoking metamorphosis, Invisible Words re-affirms the resilience of hope and, more broadly, the resilience of art in the face of contemporary alienation and prosaic standardization.”
